Al Hurts (Fat Eb Special Report)
Al Hirt
"He's a very good trumpet player, but that's some corny-ass sh** he plays... He's like a white Uncle Tom." -- Miles Davis
I'm not going to front.I laughed my ass off when I read this.I still laugh. What I enjoy is the sheer audacity. How dare you say this shit Miles? Many people got tight when Miles said Eric Dolphy sounded like someone was standing on his foot when he played.Same people still listen to him though and I bet are influenced by him in some way.
I knew a woman once who said she would never listen to Miles because he hit woman. We all know Miles did that but we listen anyway, his horn leaves us no choice.
When Miles son Gregory comes through the Ash I always try to rap with him, usually about his book.I pissed him off by bringing up the Miles film coming out since they didn't consult him.He cursed them out Miles style.I'm pretty sure he sometimes wears the same wild glasses Miles wore on one of his wild 70's joints.(Live Evil still one of my desert island discs.) I've heard Gregory play and I stand by my statement that it's the most avant garde Trumpet I have ever heard in my life. It's beyond the creep.
Anyway..no Dis on Al.He was a good trumpet player..think he gave Wynton his first horn. His music is fun simple happy time stuff. He's a little to Santa Claus for me.Maybe Al was somebody that just loved playing the horn.I've been busted smiling like that after getting my shit off proper.Little Louis in all of us somehow, even Miles.
Anyway..the reason for this unscheduled Fat Eb is that I'm putting the word out that I'm opening comments again. The reason I stopped was a cyber-freak who really has it in for me.This particular person goes past no name bad reviews of my stuff..he tries to impersonate me and leave comments around the web and hacks into wikipedia to rewrite his special version of my life story.Strange dark shit but true.Anyway, comments are back should you choose to pursue honest discourse.I'll have to moderate however. My Facebook fan page has always been open.I want to take steps to reach an audience outside of jazz-land and have been doing some research on how people bust down all the fake walls. The first thing is to not talk about yourself.Little late for that as my blog is a public spiritual journal of sorts.I have a unique position in the world of Jazz.Giving people a front row seat is my thing.I would also love to know who the people are out there reading.

Last word on Miles,(as if) I met Frances Davis at Tower once and we spoke for about 10 minutes. She told me she learned how to duck from that relationship. This woman had more class and dignity than maybe anybody I ever met.
In the end the final conclusion was inevitable..
Frances Davis was fine as hell...
For Kerry Washington. . . .
